Silicon levels in your aquarium:
|
Silicon is used in your system by Diatoms, Radiolarian and silicic sponges, primarily
in the form of Silicic acid. Silicon is typically depleted from your system through
various organisms as well as by particulate matter adsorption.
Elevated Silicon and resulting Diatom blooms could be the result of the DI portion
of your RO system needing replacement, or that your source water is very high in
Silicon to begin with.
RO/DI water combined with a good quality
salt mix will usually suffice in the maintenance
of adequate Silicon levels.
An important note on Diatoms; Diatoms can be a convenient nutrient sink in LPS systems
in that they can easily be removed from the system by wiping off your glass, and
simply allowing the protein skimmer to extract them. Of course, depending on the
type of system you have, you will want to consider this philosophy carefully as
Diatoms can wreak havoc on SPS corals and Gorgonians.
