Although nuisance algae feed on Iron, it is required by the photosynthetic zooxanthellae
and macro algae in your system. Maintaining Iron at a natural level with regular
water changes is recommended. An additional benefit of Iron is that it binds to
toxic trace elements and aids in the removal of the same.
Adequate protein skimming combined with regular water changes using a good quality
salt mix will ensure your Iron levels are within an acceptable range for most systems.
Iron content in the ocean varies considerably from region to region so we have stated
a value on the high end of the scale. Most systems will find their levels to be higher as a result of source water and additives such as food and supplements.
A great addition to your system is a refugium housing chaetomorphae macro alga.
This will help keep your Iron as well as phosphates and nitrates in check.
