Calcium is an important element used by corals to build their skeletal structure.
Calcium is used up quickly by the reef system so continuous dosing is required.
Some aquarists achieve higher levels of Calcium and Alkalinity by dosing elevated
amounts of Magnesium.
It is important to note that while maintaining Calcium levels the aquarist should
maintain the pH and Alkalinity of the water at optimal levels. Low Alkalinity
and high Calcium levels will result in an environment where calcification is difficult.
Lab Aquatics recommends a pH of 8.4, an Alkalinity of 9 dKH and a Calcium level of 400 ppm for most reef systems. Maintained using either a Calcium reactor or Kalkwasser
dosing and carbonate buffer. Testing for Calcium use should be performed prior to
a regular water change until dosing levels can be determined for your unique system
demands.
It's helpful to know what levels of Calcium are added by your salt after your regular
water change.
