Arsenic levels in your aquarium:
|
Estuarine infauna has been found to be susceptible to levels of Arsenic above 3ppb. There
are known cases of natural Arsenic levels exceeding 50ppm in some areas of the ocean, typically in volcanic regions.
Notwithstanding, Arsenic is considered a toxin that can affect growth, reproduction
and behavior of your reef organisms.
Physiochemical factors such as pH and Redox as well as feeding behaviour and uptake
rates will have an impact on the affect of Arsenic on your aquatic life.
To reduce and control the Arsenic levels in your aquarium; do not add to your system
the store water which comes with your organism purchases. Check the Arsenic levels
in your tap or source water if our test reveals that you have an elevated Arsenic
level; Filtration products, are available to remove up to 99.9% of Arsenic
from your source water supply.
Arsenic and phosphate are easily substituted for one another chemically; as a result
commercial grade phosphate can have Arsenic in it, which is more of a concern for
individuals who draw their source water from a well or river.
Inorganic forms of Arsenic can be removed from the water source through RO filtration
and from the aquarium through the use of activated carbon. Care should be taken
to follow the instructions on the activated carbon product you use, as filtered
contaminants can leach back into your system.
